2009 Announcement: Honor Roll Format Changing

In an effort to improve our processes, and being mindful of the time invested by schools and stakeholders, the National Catholic High School Honor Roll will be moving away from its annual format. This year there will be a hiatus from the award as we consult with the various stakeholders to determine the best timeline for implementing an every-other-year award system.

We believe this change will be beneficial in a number of ways:

  • Time: Catholic schools often have limited time and human resources to complete the extensive application on a yearly basis.
  • School Improvements: Schools have noted that the annual cycle does not allow enough time to make improvements. With the new arrangement, schools will have more time to study the feedback report and implement changes.
  • Honor Roll Updates: To become more efficient, several substantial time-consuming updates are required. We plan to update the website, database, research, surveys, measures and reports, all in order to better serve schools.
  • Cost: The new format is a way for the Honor Roll to trim costs and make better use of our resources.

We will continue to support the work and mission of Catholic secondary schools in the United States. During this 2009 hiatus we will be post regular updates online as we prepare for the next Honor Roll award. Stay tuned to this website for updated information.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Nov. 10, 2008) -The National Catholic High School Honor Roll announced its fifth selection of the best 50 Catholic secondary schools in the United States. In keeping with the Second Vatican Council’s dual stress on the “earthly city” and the “Kingdom of God,” the Catholic High School Honor Roll recognizes schools that both embrace a vibrant Catholic identity and instill an appreciation of the social, political, and economic dimensions of the world that students will engage.

Despite the many challenges in Catholic secondary education, those schools that face these struggles with excellence and integrity deserve to be recognized. The Catholic High School Honor Roll measures a school’s strength in three areas:

  • Academic Excellence
  • Catholic Identity
  • Civic Education

The primary goal of the Honor Roll is to encourage schools to educate students as effectively as possible, in a way that integrates Catholic faith and prepares students for active engagement with the world. By supporting this constructive competition, the Honor Roll provides insight into the character of Catholic secondary education and calls everyone to improve the academic and spiritual formation given to America’s youth. In promoting rigorous education, the Honor Roll desires to better prepare students for fruitful vocations in politics, business, and the Church.
